Education in the Digital Era Open Webinar II: “EU MOOCs: A challenge for Europe, a benefit for all”

The world is digitizing and education is not immune to this transition. One of the major educational changes that this new reality has brought is the development of Massive Open Online Courses.

"MOOCs have captured the interest of academics and public since 2011 as they bring opportunities of opening up learning and offering a wide range of choice in different areas and disciplines for a massive number of participants from anywhere all over the world to attend free online courses without any admission requirements" (Liyanagunawardena, Adams & Williams, 2013).

How far is Europe from making a reality the initial vision of MOOCs to break down obstacles to education for anyone, anywhere and at any time? The EU has embraced the movement of openness with several initiatives promoting the launch of European MOOCs and supporting the development of European MOOC platforms (i.e. “Opening up Education”).

But how difficult is to develop a genuine European dimension of MOOCs? Are there any common EU policies or strategies regarding issues like MOOCs' quality, design or pedagogy? What opportunities and challenges arise from moving towards a European dimension of MOOCs? How easy is for anyone to have access to these courses? What benefits can obtain participants? How teachers can benefit from these resources (for instance, in terms of professional development, as a teaching resource, etc.)?

The EdDigEra team is organising the second Digital Era Open Webinar entitled “EU MOOCs: A challenge for Europe, a benefit for all” and would like to invite you to this OPEN and ONLINE discussion to explore the opportunities of open education and European MOOCs. A panel of distinguished experts will facilitate and enrich the dialogue that will take place on line on May 26th at 18:00 CET.
